About ABRSM coaching

I set up ABRSM violin exam coaching to support students and their teachers, working toward violin exams. Spanning all the grades from 1-8 including the various diplomas the aim is to provide independent, high- level, generous support and insightful, individually tailored, teaching.

Though I am not in any way a devotee of the music exam culture, I am certain that meeting any exam or audition with a musical and fun approach can encourage healthy growth as a musician and the best chance of success in any exam.

Exams do provide a goal, however, and I have found that having well- chosen goals (and mini-goals) are essential in the preparation of music, generally. Meeting any musical target requires a clear methodology and an up- to-date understanding of the learning process – not least an awareness of the difference between subjective and objective measures of progress. Having access to reliable forms of feedback is therefore essential.

ABRSM coaching aims to provide provide such feedback, with performance platforms, online and in person, as well as one-off constructive, honest (but kind) advice.

Other aspects of playing which receive special attention include expert advice about set-ups – and improving your own. Solid advice about preparation and performance anxiety – enabling you to give your best in the exams – is a regular feature of the coaching.

Coaching and discussing – be the best version of yourself!
